This has got to be the strangest anti-hunting campaign ever: whose idea was it to have a model wearing a fur coat pose with a bear?
Now I’ve been around the block a couple of times and I’ve seen some pretty weird stuff, but this has got to be one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen. Having a barely-clothed model pose with a brown bear while wearing a fur coat has got to be the strangest anti-hunting campaign ever.
This anti-hunting campaign featured scantily-clad models posing in a snowy landscape outside Moscow alongside a 1,430-pound (650kg) brown bear named Stephen. Stephen is a tame brown bear who has been specially trained to appear in movies.
According to photographer Olga Barantseva, the purpose of this bizarre anti-hunting campaign was:
To show the natural harmony between humans and bears. It is about showing a traditional friendship – just like between two human friends – but between humans and the bears in Russia. We all need to live side-by-side in harmony and not hunt our fellow citizens who live in the forest.
European brown bears are very similar to their American cousins and are extremely large, powerful, and potentially dangerous. Having a woman hugging one of these creatures like it is a perfectly normal thing to do is disingenuous at best, and extremely irresponsible at worst.
Brown bears are wild animals and extremely effective predators and should be treated as such. It is fine if you don’t want to hunt bears. However, living in harmony with brown bears does not involve having one of them tuck you into bed. Try to act like that around a wild brown bear and see how it works out for you.
Also, whose idea was it to have one of the models wear a fur coat during the photo shoot? So, hunting is bad but wearing fur is okay? I’m sure it was cold during the photo shoot, but this is really sending some conflicting messages.

“Stephen, you have morning breath.”
How would you like to have a bear tuck you in at night?
Whoops! Someone forgot to take off the fur coat before taking photos for the anti-hunting campaign.
He looks sleepy…
Stephen does not look like he appreciates that.
Not really sure what is going here…
