You’ve killed an animal in the backcountry. Congratulations. Here’s what to do next.
In this short but informative video, Steven Rinella shows us his system for breaking down a backcountry kill and getting the meat back to the vehicle.
Watch and learn and you’ll be ready to make a backcountry kill of your own.
Let’s review the steps for getting your animal out the backcountry.
- Gut the animal to get it cooling down as soon as possible.
- Skin the animal and remove the meat.
- Place the meat in game bags to keep it clean while still allowing it to cool.
- Load it up and pack it out.
Hunting the backcountry will help you find more and less pressured animals to hunt. Knowing how to get them out when you are successful will give you the confidence to hunt farther from the road and ultimately make you more successful.
