The National Shooting Sports Foundation just endorsed the Sportsmen’s Act of 2015, a bill that would safeguard America’s hunting and fishing traditions.

United States Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico) have introduced the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2015. Endorsed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2015 is a package of legislation friendly to outdoorsmen (and women) that is specifically designed to safeguard and promote America’s hunting and fishing traditions.

Among other things, the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act is designed to protect the use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle, changing the law to allow the use of Pittman-Robertson funds for shooting ranges, and several provisions aimed at improving outdoor recreation on lands owned and administered by the United States Government.

Of particular concern to many sportsmen and women right now is lead ammunition and fishing tackle. The Sportsmen’s Act of 2015 contains a provision specifically stating that ammunition and fishing tackle are exempt from regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

Another key portion of the bill would require that the annual Land and Water Conservation Fund set aside 1.5% of its total funds to secure access to public lands that are either impossible or extremely difficult for the public to access.

According to Senator Martin Heinrich, one of the sponsors of the bill:

The number one issue for sportsmen and women across the country is access. This widely supported, bipartisan bill will open more areas to hunting and fishing and grow America’s thriving outdoor recreation economy. Hunters and anglers alone spend more than $465 million per year in New Mexico, and outdoor recreation as a whole is directly responsible for 68,000 jobs in our state. As an avid hunter myself, I remain deeply committed to preserving our outdoor heritage and treasured public lands for future generations to enjoy.

The Sportsmen’s Act of 2015 has also been endorsed by the National Rifle Association and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

In addition to Senators Murkowski and Heinrich, Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia), Debra Fischer (R-Nebraska) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-North Dakota) are also co-sponsors of this bill.
