Southern California Angler Hooks into Great White Shark While Pier Fishing

This pier fisherman got more than he probably bargained for on this day.

It’s pretty rare to see the biggest, most-feared shark of the ocean: the great white. To catch a great white is probably even rarer. But in San Clamente California, something even more unlikely happened. A fisherman hooked into the ocean’s deadliest predator not from a boat, but from a pier!

Obviously, they weren’t going to be able to haul a big shark up onto the pier, so the fisherman had to try and get the shark free while it was still in the water. Apparently, it took over 20 minutes, but as you can see, eventually the great white gets free and swims back into the depths.

What a cool encounter. I’ve never heard of anyone catching a great white without a boat before. I’d say this angler definitely has a story to brag about. And it’s good to see this awesome predator of the deep was able to swim off to fight another day.
