Sorry, There Was No Live Possum Drop in Brasstown, N.C. This Year

A small town tradition gets a big change, and the Possum Drop succumbs to pressure.

The annual “Possum Drop” celebratory New Year’s Eve tradition in Brasstown, North Carolina happened last night, but not with a live opossum.

The annual custom of capturing a possum (Brasstown is known as the Possum Capital of the South), placing it in a Plexiglass enclosure and lowering it at the stroke of midnight has gained attention thanks to pressure from PETA claiming that the event is akin to animal abuse.

In fact, the organizer has already tried several tactics to get around PETA’s accusations and still carry on with the event he calls “good clean family fun, a good old redneck good time.”
