A 62-year-old man was the victim of a sea lion attack on San Diego Bay.
A fisherman holding his catch for a photo was dragged into the water when a sea lion lunged over the side of his boat in an attempt to grab the fish.
This is completely out of the norm; we don’t normally see…
I’ve never heard of a seal attack like this before.
Sea lions are native to the California coast and reside in great numbers in San Diego Bay. Some sea lions can reach up to 300 pounds. They tend to congregate in marinas, especially on the docks and have been known to be aggressive towards humans.
The sea lion, in an attempt to grab the fish, got the fisherman’s arm along with it. In an extraordinary case of bad luck combined with animal hunger, the 62-year-old ended up in the water for almost twenty seconds. The sea lion attack left him with bites on both hands and his feet.
As to the question of why the sea lions are becoming more aggressive:
The sea lion numbers are strong,
But their food supply is shrinking.
