Scary Situation for Angler as Ice Pack Breaks Apart

Conditions changed instantly for this ice angler, making for one scary video play-by-play.

Steve Rubyor found himself in quite the predicament February 11 while ice fishing, enjoying the relative safety of standing firmly on eight-inches of solid ice one moment, to being surrounded by open water mere minutes later.

The dramatic turn of events happened on Chaumont Bay, N.Y., and according to Rubyor, the closest open water was some two miles away when he drilled his first hole that morning. As you'll see, the ice breakup stranded many anglers and in quite precarious positions. Luckily, help arrived an hour later.

Here's the video:

Talk about an unnerving experience! Goes to show you how quickly conditions can change out there.

According to a Facebook post, Rubyor lost all of his gear and his snow machine. Fortunately, things can be replaced. Your life, not so much. You can also hear him speak about the experience in an interview here.

Be safe out there, fellow anglers.
