The first black bear harvest totals are coming in, and a recognizable figure took one of the first shots.

The Florida bear hunt opened this weekend all over the state with an objective of harvesting 320 adult black bears. One bear was harvested by a notable hunter who’s appeared in a reality TV show.

A total of 3,700 permits were issues to accomplish this and the hunt has since been halted in the panhandle after 180 bears tags were filled on Saturday’s opening day.

If you were ever a fan of the National Geographic reality television series, “Doomsday Preppers,” then you may recognize Bryan Smith. He was featured on the series, and as luck would have it, he is back in the spotlight after what is considered to be first black bear harvest in Florida in over 20 years.

Here’s a recent newscast breaking it all down.

Almost immediately after Smith’s pictures of his 457-pound bear hit the Internet, anti-hunting insults started flying.

For example, one of two comments from an Instagram post came from a user saying:

“COME TO FLA, WHERE SLAUGHTER IS A SPORT! … This bear was befriended by this hunter, then killed. The hunters I know have honor. This is not about hunting as a sport.”

You can only imagine where it went from there.

The bear hunt will continue in the northern and southern parts of Florida on Sunday or until the state established quota has been met.
