The age-old whitetail tactic of rattling also works on elk!
Ralph Ramos, an elk guide, shows hunters how to rattle for elk bulls using the same techniques as whitetail hunters. The technique seems to be best used when elk are rutting and actively searching for cows in heat. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation recently posted this video on their YouTube channel showing how to ratttle for bulls.

Elk, like whitetails, are drawn to fights during the rut in hopes of stealing a female away from another male. Rattling is a great way to mimic this natural habit and cash in on a bull’s weakest moments.
