The USS Zumwalt was just commissioned as the largest navy destroyer ever, and is yet another in a long line of the most badass naval vessels that roam the ocean.
Does the rest of the earth understand how potent, extremely powerful, and dangerous any United States Naval Destroyer is?
Well, they’re about to get another lesson by way of the USS Zumwalt. Listed as the largest U.S Navy destroyer ever built, the USS Zumwalt comes equipped with a ridiculous amount of armament, and maybe the best-named captain ever: James A. Kirk.
All Star Trek coincidences aside, this vessel packs a punch like no other before it. It’s not enough that this ship has a vertical-launch cruise missile system or twin 45.4-MW Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines, it can create a stunning 78 MW of power that rivals our nuclear powered aircraft carriers. Oh by the way, with all that incredible power comes the fact that it could launch the next generation of beam weapons and everyone’s favorite talking point: the railgun which can launch its projectiles at Mach 6 to targets over 120 miles away.
Get a closer look here:
The Zumwalt-class destroyer can support aircraft like the MV-22 Osprey, and joint strike fighters. This thing looks like a poster child for a science fiction movie, but it’s very real. It looks like it could altogether submerge at will and disappear, and alternately stand up to a missile fight and come out shining like new.
Congratulations to the fine fighting men and women blessed to man her, and to her skipper for the charge. As Captain Kirk said of the launch:
“Today’s ceremony marked the culmination of over three years of dedication and hard work by some of the finest sailors I have had the pleasure to lead.”
