A whitetail deer was euthanized after being discovered with a crossbow bolt in its neck.

At approximately 7 A.M. on Sunday Aug. 23, a deer was found by police in a grassy area near the 1100 block of Iowa Street in Bellingham. It had a crossbow bolt sticking out of its neck and appeared to be in poor health.

As per police policy, the animal was killed by an officer.

Police have no leads on the suspected poacher but are processing the bolt for fingerprints and DNA evidence. In all likelihood, the case will be referred to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for further investigation.

In what may be a related case, a small buck was found dead earlier this month within city limits. A gunshot wound was determined to be the cause of death in that case.
