How the Ozonics Electronic Scent Eliminator Saved My Washington Spring Bear Hunt [PICS]

I was using Ozonics electronic scent eliminator on a recent bear hunt in Washington and I’m 100% confident that it saved my hunt.

There are lots of products for sale these days that claim to eliminate or dramatically reduce your scent. Like most hunters, I’ve always thought that such promises sounded too good to be true. However, I had the opportunity to try out an Ozonics scent eliminator on a recent spring bear hunt in Washington and I firmly believe that it was the difference between success and failure for me on the hunt.

I was hunting in a ground blind set up on a clearing which contained a bait site (which is legal on the Quinault Indian Reservation). The wind was light, but steadily blowing across the clearing from my right to left.

Other than using my Ozonics electronic scent eliminator (courtesy of the good folks at Ozonics), I did not take any special precautions regarding my scent. I attached my Ozonics electronic scent eliminator to the roof of the blind, pointed it out the downwind window, and turned it on.

My ground blind is marked by the arrow on the left in the photo below. The arrow on the right denotes the approximate position of the bear as it sat on the edge of the clearing.

The bear never gave any sign that it thought anything was wrong and decided that the coast was clear shortly before dark. At that time, it walked nonchalantly across the clearing to the bait. A few minutes later, I shot the bear (a ~150 pound sow), bringing my hunt to a successful conclusion.

I managed to get most of the hunt on video using a camcorder mounted on a tripod in the blind. I did not get the camera started fast enough to capture all of the bear’s movements, but you can still tell the bear was moving generally from left to right at the beginning of the video.

After I take the shot, the smoke from my muzzleloader blows off to the left, showing the wind direction, which was blowing directly towards the bear for a period of time.

I’m certain that my Ozonics electronic scent eliminator was the difference between success and failure on this hunt. Bears have extremely sensitive noses that are even more sensitive than the nose on a deer. This bear knew what it was doing by coming in from downwind and scoping out the bait for a while before eating from the bait site.

There is no doubt in my mind that the bear would have immediately left had it thought that something was amiss. Instead, it observed the bait for approximately an hour then walked out into the clearing like it owned the place. For that, I have the Ozonics electronic scent eliminator to thank.

How does the Ozonics electronic scent eliminator work?

In short, it is a small, portable ozone machine which transforms oxygen molecules into ozone molecules. These ozone molecules bond with the scent molecules that you are constantly producing.

The Ozonics electronic scent eliminator emits a constant stream of ozone into your scent plume, which then significantly reduces your scent signature, making it much more difficult for animals to smell you. More specific details on the how the Ozonics electronic scent eliminator works are available on the Ozonics website.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the Ozonics machines is their price. No matter how well they work, $400 is a lot of money for most people to spend on a single piece of equipment, especially if you’re not sure that it will work. Fortunately, Ozonics has a 100% money back guarantee if you use the product as directed and do not experience significantly fewer “busts.”

Obviously, this story is just a single anecdotal observation in an uncontrolled environment. Additionally, Ozonics machines are not magical and cannot guarantee a successful hunt on their own.

However, most hunters have only a few limited opportunities to bag a big game animal during hunting season and letting a couple of those opportunities slip away can be pretty painful. An Ozonics electronic scent eliminator can really even the playing field and help you make the most of the opportunities that you get.

Yes, they are expensive, but consider it a good investment on making the handful of days that you can hunt really count. Personally, I plan on using my Ozonics electronic scent eliminator on all my future hunts.
