Nobody Told This Swimming Mountain Lion That Cats Don’t Like Water

Imagine you’re motoring across your favorite water skiing destination when you come across a swimming mountain lion.

That’s exactly what happened to Jordan Kirbyson of Bellingham, Washington on June 5.

Kirbyson, his father, and a friend were heading home after a morning of water skiing when they noticed something swimming in Lake Whatcom. As the group approached, they realized it was a swimming mountain lion and Jordan pulled out his phone to record the incident.

Watch the video to see what it’s like to be 15 feet from a swimming mountain lion.

The mountain lion swam the half-mile across the lake in about 15 minutes. When it reached the shore near the Hertz Trail, a popular hiking trail, he bolted into the trees.

Kirbyson later said of the incident, “We were just in awe of the majesty of this thing that was going on in front of us. It was truly a unique and special experience. It was amazing.”

Local wildlife officials stated that, while seeing a mountain lion near a water source is pretty common, catching one of the big cats swimming is very rare.
