Newfoundlanders Attempting to Lasso and Ride a Beluga Whale

Toronto Sun

Reports have surfaced that people in eastern Newfoundland have been trying to lasso and ride a resident beluga whale.

The federal Fisheries Department is investigating reports of a whale that is frequenting the area near Grates Cove in eastern Newfoundland.

The beluga likes to swim with divers but recently people have been attempting to lasso and ride it.

Signs have been placed in the area warning residents not to interfere with the whale for its own safety.

Human interaction with beluga whales can often end in serious injury or death, with the latter being the case for a beluga whale hit by a boat propeller in the Calvert area in 2002.
