This is a record burbot of serious proportions!
A new state burbot has just been caught out of Lake of the Woods, Minnesota. This giant fish, also known as an eelpout, weighed in at 19 pounds, 11 ounces. The old record, that has stood since 2012, was 19 pounds, eight ounces. When the fish was being weighed in on certified scales at a local grocery store, a state DNR employee just happened to be there to witness and verify the whole thing.
“It’s pretty crazy,” said Brent Getzler, who caught the record burbot, in an interview. “My phone has been blowing up pretty much constantly now.”
Getzler was fishing in 26 feet of water in an ice shanty when the big fish hit. He was expecting it to be a big walleye, but got quite a shock when he realized what it was he’d actually hooked.
“I thought man, he’s ugly — and he’s big,” Getzler said. “It’s pretty exciting. I’ve never seen a fish with a belly like this. It’s a pretty big belly!”
All the paperwork to certify this eelpout as the new record has been submitted and seemingly in order. At this point, it’s just a matter of time before it’s official.
Congrats, Brent. on such a great fish (even if it is ugly).
