A string of mountain lion attacks have ranchers worried about their livestock.
Ranchers in the Santa Monica Mountains of California are dealing with a serious problem. Lately, there have been a number of fatal attacks on livestock. The main culprit happens to be a notorious mountain lion named “P45.”
The lion appears to prefer alpacas and llamas, but cattle and horses can and do become targets. Experts say the kills aren’t anything too out of the ordinary, so to speak.
“When a mountain lion kills unprotected livestock it’s an easy meal for him,” says Kate Kuykendall, of the National Parks Service. “It’s not a sign of aggressive or abnormal behavior.”
The frequency of the attacks has ranchers wondering about whether the problem will continue to get worse. Some people fear that humans will become the subject of mountain lion attacks, rather than domesticated animals.
While there’s plenty of options available for dealing with lion attacks, no one can seem to agree which method is best.
