Montana Hunter Shoots Mountain Lion at Point Blank Range To Save Hounds

Watch this footage of a hunter shooting a mountain lion at point blank range to save his dogs.

This mountain lion hunt in Montana did not go as planned and ended with the hunter shooting the mountain lion at point blank range to save his dogs.

Watch the video to see how the hunt ended.

Warning: This video is pretty graphic and intense.

According to the person who posted the video on YouTube, they were legally hunting mountain lion with hounds when they treed the cougar. As is typical on a hound hunt, they tied the hounds up safely before taking a shot. The hunter then made a poor shot on the cougar, which left the safety of the tree and ran off. After searching the area for nearly 20 minutes without finding blood, they turned the hounds loose to find the mountain lion again.

Unfortunately, when the hounds caught up to the mountain lion, it decided to fight it out on the ground instead of trying to climb a tree again. The person who filmed the video (presumably the guide), quickly caught up to the pack of hounds and shot the mountain lion at point blank range to save his dogs.

That is unfortunate that the hunt had to end that way. However, following up a wounded animal is the ethical thing to do and he made a very good shot that prevented serious injury or death to any of his dogs.

Getting that close to an angry mountain lion armed with nothing more than a M&P 9mm handgun probably took some serious stones.
