One of the best-known walleye holes in the lower 48, Mille Lacs Lake is set to open a winter fishing season for hardy anglers.
The Minnesota DNR monitors the walleye population in Mille Lacs very closely. Because of that, regulations on the popular lake have varied each of the past few years.
On December 1, the winter walleye season will officially open back up on Mille Lacs. This cold-weather season will run all the way through February 26, 2017.
Anglers brave enough to face the cold will be allowed one walleye and five northern pike. This limit on walleye is the same as last year’s 2015 season. There is one exception, however. Anglers are allowed to keep any one walleye between 19-21 inches, or longer than 28 inches. This is a change from 2015, when the size was limited to one fish between 18-20 inches.
