“Spearfishing Huntress” Valentine Thomas’s looks are as deadly as her spear.
Valentine Thomas has taken the Internet and the spearfishing world by storm in recent weeks. The 28-year-old recently quit her cushy job at a financial firm in London to pursue her passion of spearfishing full-time.
It’s not only her incredible spearfishing talent that is grabbing so much attention, but her many pictures of her doing it in small bikinis.
Her Instagram account where she posts most of her pictures of her spearfishing in bikinis grew by more than 10,000 followers in the last 48 hours.
Like many female huntresses, Thomas has gotten negative backlash. The Canadian told the Daily Mail:
People call me a killer. I face sexism, I face a lot of hate, but I have also had marriage proposals.
Thomas fishes in order to be self-sustainable saying “For me to be able to grab my own food is amazing. I like everything – even cleaning the fish afterwards. We are really involved in sea preservation. We never kill anything we won’t eat.”
Thomas has not been spearfishing for very long but holds the world record for Atlantic jack that she caught in 2013.
Professional spearfishing is a heavily male-dominated sport and it is only recently that companies have started making gear specifically for females.
Thomas says she fishes in order to feel a connection with her food. She posts pictures of cleaning her catch which has prompted critics in calling her Jack the Ripper.
People get really angry, they get upset because they are not used to seeing where their food comes from. Everyone turns a blind eye to what they are eating and I put the reality in front of them.
Thomas hopes to one day host her own fishing television show in order to promote conservation and protect our oceans.
“My dream would be to make a TV show so I can fish for a living and I would like to get involved in protecting the ocean,” she said. “Now it’s getting harder and harder to go back to the office on Monday and go on the computer.”
Thomas echoes how many sportsmen and women feel about hunting and fishing. Meat and fish don’t just magically appear in grocery stores; hunting and fishing is a more humane way to eat meat. Valentine Thomas is making spearfishing popular and not only because she is a woman. If a bikini helps promote self-sustainability, then the more power to her.
