Meet the Whale Sharks of Isla Holbox, Mexico

Isla Holbox is a sleepy island town in the Gulf of Mexico that has some giant inhabitants.

Jonathan Bird is a renowned nature photographer and videographer who hosts a series on PBS, “Blue World.” In this episode he heads down to Mexico to find some elusive whale sharks.

The captain takes Bird and his team a mile off shore and the “hunt” for whale sharks begins. They come across dolphins, eagle rays, and a manta ray along the way and Bird gives his audience some fun facts about these sea creatures.

Finally they find a whale shark that is over 30 feet long and feeding on plankton. These creatures are incredibly large but harmless giants.

Whale sharks are incredibly shy, which I can confirm. They are extremely elusive; it took me and my family a few trips to finally swim with these gentle giants.

But once you swim with the ocean’s largest fish, you really gain some perspective on life.
