A fearless giant of a mako shark rips into a large swordfish as anglers try to bring their prize aboard.
Self-described extreme fisherman Matt Watson met an even bigger extreme fisherman in the form of a massive nine foot mako shark. Watson and crew hooked and battled a large swordfish by handlining it off the coast of Northland, New Zealand.
As Watson had the boat move in on the big fish so that they could tag and release it, suddenly everything went sideways as a huge mako shark attacked the swordfish.
The shark tore large chunks from the swordfish, bloodying the water and startling the heck out of Watson.

Even while the crew secured the billfish with rope and attempted to pull it aboard, the huge mako kept everyone on their toes as it circled the boat and what it thought was its prize.
As if handlining a giant swordfish isn’t exciting enough, battling an even bigger mako shark for your catch is even more fuel for a lifetime of fishing stories.
