The M855A1 Cartridge Actually Causes an Explosion in Ballistics Gel

The much used M855A1 cartridge does something to ballistic gelatin that is quite unexpected.

This 5.56x45mm cartridge fires a bullet that causes a small explosion inside the ballistic gelatin after impact.

Watch this video and see this strange phenomena captured on video.

This interesting video from the Wound Channel shows something most of us wouldn’t have expected. It created an explosion with quite a flash.

Using an AR-15 with a 16″ barrel and M855A1 5.56x45mm ammunition fired at 10 feet away, this strange occurrence is captured on slow motion video.

Why does this happen? Hot vapor freed from the ballistic gelatin itself from the passing bullet has the possibility of igniting. This then causes an explosion.
