The German C93 Borchardt pistol just happens to be the first truly successful autoloading pistol.

Hugo Borchardt’s design (with help of the the Loewe/DWM Corporation) led to this really unique pistol.

Awkward, yes,  but it was a step in the right direction toward the modern semi-automatic pistol. Georg Luger then was hired to refine this big pistol into a better more ergonomic form.
