Wildlife photographer Helgard de Villiers caught the results of what happens when a leopard tangles with a porcupine.
Sometimes a lesson has to be learned the hard way before it really starts to sink in. That is exactly what happened to the leopard in these pictures both literally and figuratively. His mother most likely taught him to avoid porcupines when he was a cub, but this leopard had to find out why for himself.
Wildlife photographer Helgard de Villiers captured the images while visiting Kruger National Park in Africa. According to de Villiers, the leopard approached two porcupines and pounced on the larger of the two.
The pair of African creatures than disappeared behind a bush. Although they were out of sight, de Villiers could tell the leopard and porcupine were in quite the battle judging from the sounds of the encounter.
“The next thing I knew, the leopard then emerged, obviously in a lot of pain and it took him more than an hour to take out numerous quills,” said de Villiers according to GrindTV.
The leopard soon emerged from the bush with a face and body full of the porcupine’s painful quills. The quills have backwards-facing barbs which cause them to stick into whatever animal is unlucky enough to get close enough.
It took more than an hour, but the pincushion leopard was eventually able to remove all of the quills and walk away with only his pride injured. It’s a safe bet to assume that this particular leopard will steer clear of any porcupines in the future!
