Kayaker Catches Sailfish on a Cuban Yo-Yo off Pompano Beach, Florida [VIDEO]

A kayaker caught a sailfish on a Cuban yo-yo, off Pompano Beach, Florida. The Googan, as he likes to be called, has added his piece to the handlining tradition.

The Googan was fishing out of an Ocean Trident 11 Angler, in about 150 feet of water. He was using a live gog for bait and 60# Momoi Diamond mono. He did drop a bag to slow his drift while fighting the sailfish. No rod or other tackle to mention because nothing else was used.

Check out the video to see how he pulls this off with a Cuban Yo-Yo.

He reported fighting the sailfish for eight minutes and seemed to be free of cuts on his hands and fingers. He did lose it right at the boat, but it was a caught fish for sure. Quite the amazing feat. Especially when you consider he was in a kayak with no trolling motor or pedals. Sailfish are most often caught while trolling, and it’s not clear if this angler was trolling, which means that if was paddling, this is even more incredible.

This just goes to show the lengths some anglers will go to in an attempt to outdo themselves. And it made for a great video at the same time. The fish got away but the Googan got a memory that will last a lifetime.

Who needs a fishing rod anyway?
