Florida is a kayak fishing paradise, and Tampa Bay is no exception.

On my latest trip to Florida, I met up with elite guide Derick Burgos from Phatfish Kayak Charters. Derick is a master of his local waters who knows exactly where the fish are and why.

We started the day off early and were at our destination well before sunrise. As we waited for the sun to start peaking over the mangroves, we could hear the tarpon rolling all around us.

Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. On my first cast with a special gurgler patter, I was hooked up on a nice baby tarpon!

In the video below, I walk you through the day on the water.

As you can see, we were able to hook up on a nice tarpon early on. As the sun rose, the bite slowed down, but Derek found a way to move us into position to have some topwater fun with multiple baby snook. We were throwing the Poppin’ Flats Shrimp fly right up against the mangroves. After a few pops, the fly was immediately inhaled!

If you are interested in meeting up with Derick Burgos for a day of kayak fishing, you can get in touch with him via his website, phatfishkayakcharters.com.
