Jason Matzinger Looks at Mule Deer Fawns in Mule Deer Foundation Film

The Mule Deer Foundation and Jason Matzinger look at the biology of mule deer does in springtime, and the endearing beauty of mule deer fawns.

Jason Matzinger narrates a beautiful short film on mule deer fawns. The film is the fourth in the Project Mule Deer series presented by the Mule Deer Foundation.

Matzinger's soothing voice, gorgeous visuals, and warm music combine to make this a very pleasing video, perfect for its subject matter.

The video reminds me in some ways of Marty Stouffer's early wildlife films. It's almost poetic in its presentation.

Matzinger writes in the footnote to the video:

"As the snowlines recede up the mountain, the mule deer does begin to undergo an amazing transformation that happens every spring... FAWNS is the fourth in our #PROJECTMULEDEER series presented by the Mule Deer Foundation and highlights the new life of Mule Deer across the West. From what the does need to insure a successful birth, to critical fawning grounds, you will learn not only what the Mule Deer need to survive, but thrive in today's fast paced and ever changing world!"

Matzinger makes special mention of the nutritional needs of mule deer does and fawns, and what they require from their environment to survive and remain viable.

He connects the game animal directly to the land it inhabits, making a subtle though strong case for healthy and robust environments that necessarily benefit all wildlife species.

This emphasizes that organizations that focus on a particular species - such as the Mule Deer Foundation - are truly conservation organizations, as they must be mindful of the health of the total environment and many other species in addition to their focus species.

This, of course, gives credence to the truism that hunters are the world's greatest conservationists.
