Why January is the Best Time to Buy a Tent

With the cold arms of winter solidly wrapped around us for the foreseeable future, here is why January is the best time to buy a tent.

For most people camping is a summer activity for obvious reasons. Winter months like January tend to be devoted to waterfowl hunting, ice fishing, and trapping. One thing all of these activities have in common is they often require planning and the right gear to have the best experience.

Camping is no different, and although it can be hard to imagine packing up for your favorite camping spot while barren branches sway overhead, in order to have the best camping experience, the planning starts now.

Here are the top three reasons why January is the best time to buy a tent.

1. No Pressure

One reason why early winter is the best time to buy a tent is you are under no pressure to make a purchase at this point. With summer seemingly so far away you won’t settle for a tent you know is not what you are looking for. The later you put off buying your tent, the closer your first trip approaches, and the more pressure you feel to just buy something.

Plan ahead and get the gear you want by looking over several different models you think will fit your needs, and then walk away. Give yourself a few weeks before going back to finally make the purchase, if you can.

2. Prices

In January you will often be the only person in the store looking to buy a tent. As everyone knows, retailers want to move as much merchandise as they can off their shelves and goods that are out of season tend to go on sale. If you can afford to take some time and do some shopping around you can run into some pretty good saving opportunities on a tent.

Another place to look is on Internet sources like Craigslist and Ebay. Just recently my dad purchased a tent that retails for nearly a thousand dollars for a couple hundred bucks. Saving money is a major reason why January is the best time to buy a tent.

3. Anticipation

I’ve always believed that planning for trips is half the fun. Pouring over maps, checking out gear, and figuring out all the planning details for trips, particularly extended trips, can be a lot of fun. If you start planning for that epic summer trip in the winter, you just might be able to pull it off.

Setting the anticipation on edge is another reason why now is the best time to buy a tent.
