Iowa Boy Saves Grandpa’s Life While Ice Fishing

Michael Buckendahl knows the value of fishing with the younger generation.

Especially since his 6-year-old grandson saved his life on a recent ice-fishing trip in Waterloo, Iowa.

Buckendahl and his grandson, Michael “Mickey” Dorn Jr., were walking back from ice fishing at George Wyth State Park near dark when Buckendahl slipped and fell.

He hit his head on the ice and passed out.

Young Mickey had the presence of mind to find help, seeking out other anglers to call 911.

The youngster’s quick thinking was life saving because the temperature at the time had dipped below zero.
