It’s hard to believe this fish wasn’t big enough to become a new North Carolina record!
Zakk Royce of Murfreesboro, North Carolina set hooks into a blue catfish of epic proportions. Just by looking at the pictures, you would have to think it became the new North Carolina record, but in fact, it was just shy. Considering this giant blue catfish weighed in right at 90 pounds, who really cares!
To add little more credibility to this already incredible story, Royce was able to get the whole thing on video.
Royce is no stranger to catching big blue catfish. As a matter of fact, he owned the state record for this fish with a 105-pound monster since 2006. It wasn’t until this spring that a 115-pound giant was caught to claim the top spot. Don’t feel bad for Royce though. As you can see, he is still catching some huge fish.
“I believe it was 3 attempts before I actually got the fish in the net,” said Royce in an interview after catching the beast on Lake Gaston. “I would go to scoop and it would roll back down. When it was finally in the net, I took a couple of deep breaths and got it over the side of the boat.”
Just like all of Royce’s giant blue catfish, this one was also released right back in the lake.
