Traffic came to a sudden halt when this burly brown bear decided to jaywalk a busy Alaskan highway.
It was an eventful morning for commuters traversing the Glenn Highway near Eagle Lake on June 6. And rain was not the only thing pounding the pavement that day – but also something big, brown, and covered entirely in fur.
For professional photographer Shane Spencer, heading home after a morning photo shoot was about all that was on his mind. That would suddenly change when a brown bear decided to bolt out onto the highway – and Spencer was quick to grab his camera.
“The bear was ‘really, really excited as it came out of the woods’ east of the northbound lanes. It was on the Eagle River side of the Hiland Road exit. The bear darted around on the side of the highway before deciding to cross. Vehicles had enough warning to come to a complete stop on the freeway,” he said.
As a half-dozen vehicles stopped for the bear, it paused briefly in the median before reaching the safety of the other side. “It was cool to be part of the scene,” Spencer said. “No one attempted to pass the bear. Everyone was bear aware.”
A pretty memorable moment to witness. And lucky for the bear and those in vehicles, this story had a happy and safe ending.
