Fishing line can get wrapped around a bird’s feet, which can then become infected. This is one of the most rampant threats against all species of birds. And it affects more than waterfowl; raptors are also known to get caught in fishing line.

Wildlife rehab facilities recommend picking up fishing line if you come across it, even if it isn’t yours. Some parks and outdoor areas are also providing containers so fishermen can properly and responsibly discard fishing line.

For more information about whether your community parks and favorite fishing spots provide fishing line containers, contact your local parks department.
