Safety should always be the first thing on the list when going ice fishing. Even in the deepest freeze you are never guaranteed that the ice is completely safe from fractures or thin ice in certain areas.

As they highlight in this video, there is never such a thing as safe ice, especially on big water as the ice is continuously moving causing cracks and weak portions to form.
Minimize the risk by wearing flotation devices, a survival suit is best, have ice picks handy, and always fish with a buddy or near other people in-case there is an emergency.
