These Hunters Take a Pair of Backcountry Blacktails with Little Help From Their Friends

This father/son hunting team hits the Northern California mountains in search of backcountry blacktails.

They are not alone, though. To help them along the way, they’ve brought some trusty pack goats and a pint sized deer finder named Sammy.

Watch the video to see what it’s like chasing backcountry blacktails with a group of four-legged friends.

Blacktail deer live in some of the densest and most impenetrable wilderness areas along the Pacific coast. Finding and killing them can be a challenge for the fittest of hunters, whatever age they may be. Luckily, these hunters came prepared with some pack goats and a deer finding dog.

This hunt not only illustrates the importance of fitness and pack animals in the backcountry, but the rejuvenating effect that wildfires can have on the landscape. What was once a patch of open timber has now become a backcountry blacktail hotspot, proving that not all “natural disasters” are disastrous in the long view.
