Were its eyes bigger than its belly for this hungry pike? You be the judge.
We’ve all heard tales of trophy pike feasting on hapless ducks. I’ve even seen photos of the stomach contents of these fish, with a duck or two stuffed inside. But this might be a first: a video showing a trophy northern pike, leisurely swimming with a live duck clenched in its jaw.
The video, shot with a cell phone on an unknown lake, highlights the fact that duck attacks by voracious pike might be more common than we think.
Although it isn’t conclusive, our guess is the duck met an untimely demise. It did give one valiant attempt at an escape, but when you think about it, the jaws of a pike – and the lightning-quick reflexes these fish possess – really are no match for our feathered friends.
A duck replica lure was just released at ICAST this week. I’d say the designer might be on to something.
