How to Salvage a Horrible Fishing Trip When Everything Goes Wrong

fishing trip

We’ve all had a horrible fishing trip when everything goes wrong. Here’s how to make the best of it.

You’re not working, and you’re already at the lake, so you should make the best of your time and turn a horrible fishing trip into something worthwhile. There is no sense in going home.

Here are several things you can do to make sure your day still serves to better you as an angler.

Graph the Lake

Maybe your trolling motor batteries are dead, or the fishing is just awful. This is the perfect time to get behind the wheel and go. Watch your graph and idle the lake looking for depth changes, deep weedlines, or anything to try out next time out. It is fun to go to a different area of the lake that you don’t always fish. (Of course, it’s also a great way to find new spots).

With the technology available today from Navionics, you can even map the lake as you are idling. This is a way to improve the lake for next time, and since you are already there, it makes sense.

Try a New Technique

If the fishing is bad, why not try a new technique. If you are not catching anything anyway, you might as well get acquainted with a new lure or fishing style. Pay attention to how the bait looks under the surface, the best way to cast it and experiment with different retrieves. You’ve got nothing to lose at this point.

Go for a Boat Ride

Why not just go and cruise the lake? If the fishing is bad and nothing’s going right, why not open it up and burn some gas? Many people don’t get to be on the water as much as us die-hard anglers and would love to just go for a ride. Enjoy it.
