So, first thing: don't ever buy a used firearm that shows any signs of DIY gunsmithing. That's just not safe or smart. I don't know of many gun shops that will let you bring in a small hammer to tap on a barrel, so focus on the obvious problems listed in this video and use your wedding ring. I have found that I can tap the barrel with my ring and it will make a resonating sound just like the hammer shown in this video.
