For one Florida alligator it was life in the slow lane after it took a ride on the back of a manatee.

Here’s one Florida gator that was saving himself for the big dance. For one woman hiking Blue Spring State Park, in Orange City it was the photographic moment-of-the-day when a freeloading alligator seemed to be hitching a ride on a manatee.

Since the funny picture was posted to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Facebook page as an entry to a manatee photo contest, it took on new life and began to gain steam, but appearances can be deceiving.

One FWC expert agreed that the gator just happened to be swimming when the big sea cow showed up.

Ron Mezich said,

“I would guess that these manatees were hanging out near warm water or heading to warm water and the alligator was looking for a sunny spot to hang out along the shoreline and they simply crossed paths”

Whatever the case the large size of manatees makes them pretty hard to ‘swallow’ for any gator. Mostly they just live together peacefully and share the same waters. Here’s hoping that this fun picture wins a prize for giving us the smile of the day!
