Hikers on Oahu Taking Bigger Risks Due to Social Media Allure [VIDEO]

More and more people are taking bigger risks in the backcountry due to photos they see on social media.

State officials in Honolulu are seeing more and more people heading to the backcountry in order to hike dangerous trails, leading to death and injury. The novice hikers are often seeing pictures that their friends post on social media and push themselves past their comfort level.

Just this month a 27-year-old was killed from falling 500 feet off a dangerous trail she was hiking illegally.

More and more visitors are looking for outdoor recreation in Oahu and officials will have to keep up with the amount of people in the backcountry.

A study they release every five years will help them get state funding in order to upkeep public parks.
