Hiker freaks out after finding creepy area filled with missing persons posters and other strange things.
Hikers are always finding unique and sometimes strange places while exploring the woods. While many are pretty interesting, some are just downright creepy. That is what happened to James Rankin while exploring a remote area in Berkeley Jackson County Park on Long Island: he discovered an area of trees plastered with various “missing persons” posters, a partially assembled wooden “cage,” and more.
The video below shows everything, along with a very freaked out Rankin.
(NOTE: THERE IS EXPLICIT LANGUAGE IN THIS VIDEO).
After bailing on the area, Rankin took his video straight to the police. They agreed it was extremely odd and began looking into the matter. Their investigation soon shed some light on the scene.
Rankin had accidentally wandered onto unmarked private property. The owners claim it was all a set up for a Halloween party and would be removed by the end of the month. Since nothing illegal was going on, the matter was dropped.
It all still seems a little strange, especially since there are actual missing people on the posters. Rankin seems to agree and posted this statement on his Facebook:
As of 9AM Oct. 4th, the police have told me that the homeowner of the adjacent property is claiming this was set up for a “Halloween party” and that it would be taken down after Halloween. They are not investigating further.
What I wanna know is, if these were “Halloween party” decorations, why have they been hanging there for weeks or months? Because it was plainly obvious that the stuff had been there for quite a while, and not set up recently. That’s clearly the case as seen in the videos. Seems to me they’re just using the time of year as an excuse (just my opinion).
Also gotta wonder just what sort of person thinks it’s OK to use real missing persons posters of people’s lost loved ones as party decor.
All the attention has caused quite a commotion for the property owners as locals have begun to seek out the spot. They have since hung “no trespassing” signs to mark their property line, and local police have asked everyone to leave the area alone.
We may never know the real reasoning behind the creepy scene Rankin discovered, but it isn’t the first and definitely won’t be the last creepy thing discovered by outdoorsmen.
