The haunting cry of the red-legged seriema may sound like noise to some, but music to the ears of others.
This crested bird is not what we usually think of when we listen to song birds singing in the backyard.
These South American members of the Cariamidae family are long legged, predatory, and have a voice like a cross between a young dog barking and a hoarse turkey.
Well that’s not like any bird I ever heard singing in my backyard.
Seriema’s can be heard up to several miles away in the grasslands from Brazil south of the Amazon to Uruguay. Many of the indigenous peoples in the region have fond memories of hearing this unique and beautiful bird sing its song in the distance.
As outdoorsmen we can certainly appreciate someone else’s view of growing up and learning to love nature.
