This Guy Restored His Great-Grandad’s Axe by Hand

One person found their great-grandad’s axe and decided to restore it by hand.

While Imgur user “IDidItMyself” didn’t take a photo of the axe head in its rusted condition, he did capture an image of the handle and head after he gave it a vinegar bath. What follows is a sick restoration of his great-grandad’s axe.

The blade itself was pretty ragged, but there was a stamp included that became visible after the vinegar bath. The uploader wrote, “Some online research and some knowledge from my dad means we reckon this was made around 1920-1940.”

He redefined the edge using a hand file. That’s right, a hand file.

Next he went to work on creating a new handle since the old one was fairly rotted and soft. Not ideal.

Then came time to put two and two together. Or one and one, I should say. Here it is following a Danish Oil finish.

And the finished product next to a knife he also restored in the process of shaping the axe handle. What an awesome job!
