The marlin is a perciform fish, most closely related to the swordfish and Scombridae. They originally earned their named from sailors who equated their elongated upper jaw to the marlinspike, a tool used to separate strands of rope. The largest black and blue marlin can reach up to 16 ft in length and weigh between 1,400 to 1,800 pounds.
