Big or small, any of these firearms are useful for home defense.
There are literally thousands of choices to consider when choosing what weapons to keep close by in case of a home intrusion. Whether it be a shotgun, handgun, or automatic rifle, the most important things to consider when making your decision are reliability and effectiveness.
Here is a quick Top 5 list from Iraqveteran8888 showing a variety of firearms that would be both reliable, and effective, for home defense.

In the world of home defense, you want to be confident that if you ever find yourself or your family in a compromising situation, you know that you can count on your gun protecting you. The last thing you want to deal with during a home invasion is a gun jam.
To sum things up, here is the list (in no particular order):
- Maverick 88 12 gauge pump
- Mossberg 500 20 gauge pump
- Smith & Wesson Governor
- Glock 19
- Kriss Vector
For me, pump shotguns are the way to go. Knockdown power, coupled with a spread that doesn’t require you to have pinpoint accuracy in a high-stress situation. The Smith & Wesson Governor looks like a real dandy, offering you several ammunition options, including 2 1/2 inch 410 shells, 45 Colt, and 45 ACP.
Though the video states these firearms are in no particular order, it is apparent that the video is a little partial to the two shotguns displayed. I would have to agree. A pump action shotgun will not only get the job done, but the sound of the “pump” may be enough to scare your intruder off.
Moreover, for the ladies of the house, a 20 gauge is usually manageable, as it doesn’t have the kick that a 12 gauge does, providing ease of use for someone with a smaller frame.
