European police are starting to find themselves outgunned when fighting criminals, especially jihadist terrorists.
Despite strict gun control laws, European police are quickly learning they are woefully under-gunned when fighting many hardcore criminals these days. Criminals, especially jihadist terrorists, can easily acquire heavy weaponry, such as AK-47 rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
This was particularly evident during the recent terrorist attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine in France Jihadist terrorists were armed with Kalashnikov rifles, Scorpion machine pistols, and rocket-propelled grenades.
In addition to the civilians killed in the attack, a French police officer, who was only armed with a handgun, was also brutally murdered by the terrorists.
Europol chief of staff Brian Donald stated the Charlie Hebdo attackers:
Were armed with Kalashnikov rifles and could easily outgun the police officers who tried to apprehend them with pistols.
The attack revealed the thriving black market for weapons in Europe. The European police have recently cracked down on the illicit arms trade, but it is still incredibly easy for criminals to obtain illegal firearms.
Though the gun control laws on the books are a great “feel good” solution to crime, they may have made the situation worse. Unfortunately, the only people who have easy access to firearms are European police and criminals.
