Officials say the attack started after a fisherman hooked the shark and conducted a 30-minute fight, agitating the shark to the point of aggressiveness.
The victim was reportedly about 300 yards off the beach with a group of swimmers.
The angler cut the line and a surfer put the victim on his board to bring him to shore.
The beach remained open except for a 1-mile stretch which was closed to swimmers. The fishing pier is closed until Tuesday, says the LA Times.
