A family traveling through Washington State this Memorial Day weekend stopped to save a wounded bald eagle.
James Zilka and his family were headed to Graham, Washington for a Memorial Day fishing trip. As they were driving, they saw a bald eagle fall from the sky and land near the road, unmoving.
“There is a lane for the dump trucks to use to merge out of the dump. That’s where it lay,” James told Q13 FOX News. “We stopped just in front and I grabbed my phone and called 911.”
The eagle pulled itself close to a nearby fence as crows and vultures started to circle overhead.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived on scene and caught the wounded bird. The eagle had a broken wing and a split beak from unknown causes.
The bald eagle is now in a rehabilitation facility and will recover until it is ready to return back to the wild.
What a way for the Zilka family to celebrate Memorial Day!
