Five-Foot-Long Giant Goanna? Thanks for Everything, Australia!

The Guardian

Australia is home to a wide range of dangerous creatures, including giant goanna lizards pushing five feet in length!

From venomous snakes and frightening insects to kangaroos and koalas, many interesting, and sometimes dangerous, creatures make their home in Australia. While many Australians are used to encountering the wildlife found in their country, some of them can still be surprised.

Take Eric Holland for example. Mr. Holland lives in Thurgoona, New South Wales, Australia and recently had an unexpected visitor to his home. Mr. Holland was startled by the presence of a giant goanna lizard while working in his yard. The giant goanna, or more specifically lace monitor, was first sighted dashing across Mr. Holland’s yard before scaling the wall of his house.

“I was just doing a repair job in my shed when I opened the door and I saw this huge thing run across the ground and out of sight,” Mr. Holland told the The Sydney Morning Herald.

Luckily, Mr. Holland was able to snap a picture of the giant goanna before it made its escape from his yard. This type of goanna is known to live in the area, but Mr. Holland had never before seen one after 18 years of living there.

Lace monitors are known to be generally skittish around humans which makes this sighting even more unique. The species can grow to lengths of over six feet and weigh in excess of 44 pounds.
