Learning how to make a knife from a railroad spike is a great way to experiment with blacksmithing with a result that you can actually use.

If you are interested in blacksmithing, then a great way to get started is by learning how to make a knife from a railroad spike. It is a pretty simple project that you can successfully accomplish in your own unique style that will actually give you a new tool when you’re finished.

Check out the video below of bladesmith Walter Sorrells as he demonstrates the process of going from a standard railroad spike to a finished product.

While Sorrells may be of the opinion that the railroad spike knife is a low quality knife, it’s definitely one I’d like to add to my collection, especially if I were to forge it myself.

So for those of you who have a forge, or if you are like me and have been considering building one, this looks like a prime candidate for a first project.
