What It’s Like Fishing for Bass Under the Full Moon in Colorado

Many anglers have fished at night under a full moon.

In Colorado, a bass fishing tournament takes night fishing to a whole other level.

The Full Moon Open is a marathon fishing tournament from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This year, the event took place July 23-24 on Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins.

One hundred anglers (50 boats) spent the night under the full moon trying to catch their limit of the heaviest bass they could find.

The 2016 event was the 17th annual running of the tournament. Organizers says that when it started in 2000, there were nine boats and three sponsors. This year the Full Moon Open had nearly 70 sponsors. The tournament is limited to 50 two-person teams willing to grind it out for 12 hours.

And it is a grind. This year’s winners, who caught 11.01 pounds of bass, were probably more happy the tournament was over.
